Job Description
Third Mate Motor Vessel - 1600 GT / 3000 ITC

Job Description :
This position requires a minimum of a limited USCG Merchant Mariners Third Mate License for motor vessels of size of no less than 1600 GT / 3000 ITC.

The Third Mate is responsible for the loading and discharging of cargo andballast; for communication with terminal, refinery or dock representatives and with cargo inspectors' and for the safe navigation of the vessel during the assigned watch.

The Third Mate is responsible for following all standing orders, written and verbal instructions, in accordance with regulatory and labor agreement requirements, as provided by the Master or Chief Mate. The Third Mate reports to, and is directed by the Master and Chief Mate. The Third Mate is responsible for following all orders and instructions pertaining to the loading, discharging and maintenance of deck and safety equipment. The Third Mate assists in the supervision, training and evaluation of all persons in the Deck department.

Job Duties (Summary)

Ensures that loading and discharging is done in a safe and efficient manner, and that all stability requirements are met.

Informs the Master of any cargo, navigational personnel or maintenance problems or casualties.

Informs Master and other mates of any navigational equipment failures, maintenance items, needed supplies or problems associated with navigational equipment.

Is responsible for bow, stern and bridge operations as directed by the Master during docking, undocking, and anchoring procedures.

Communicates with Master by radio or any available means to accomplish these duties.

Keeps engine room informed of necessary information for the safe operation of the vessel.


Learning and Training (Summary)

Trains and assists in the evaluation of deck personnel in watch standing and cargo duties by providing input to the Chief Mate and Master.

Stays abreast of company, federal, international rules and regulations as they pertain to the shipping industry.


Safety (Summary)

Follow Company safety policies and procedures

Maintains safety, fire fighting, and lifeboat equipment and provides training in the use of this equipment.

Participates in emergency and abandon ship drills and the use of the associated equipment.

Ensures that all company rules, safety policies, USCG rules and regulations and environmental policies are understood and carried out.

Tests fire fighting equipment in accordance with company, federal and international laws.

Participates in and occasionally leads safety meetings.

Completes accident reports describing any incidents in a timely and through matter.

Assists inspectors of cargo tanks, as required.

Maintains time logs, abstracts, radio logs and cargo reports.

Collects and maintains the chart portfolio, which includes current editions of all needed navigational charts, publications and other navigational tools as required by laws and prudent navigators.

Orders navigational tools and informs Master of any delays, problems or discrepancies.

If required, tests navigational equipment according to Company and federalregulations.

The Third Mate must also perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements :
This position requires a minimum of a limited USCG Merchant Mariners Third Mate License for motor vessels of size of no less than 1600 GT / 3000 ITC with radar observer endorsement.
Ability to read and write English. Must be fluent enough to read federal and international documents, manifests, requisitions, company updates, company procedural manuals, equipment manuals and safety updates. Must be able to write English sufficiently to write log entries, complete checklists, take written company exams including DOT and USCG materials.

Ability to interpret a navigational chart as well as add, subtract, multiple and divide in order to calculate compass error, obtain a position using celestial navigation, calculate ETAs, calculate time and stability based upon cargo volumes and locations.

Ability to speak in English with all crew members, operations, and other company shore based personnel, dock and customer personnel, pilots and USCG representatives.

Ability to maintain a stable personality during extended stays away from family and friends in trying situations.

The position requires a valid TWIC card.

The position requires a valid passport.

The position requires a valid MMD (Zcard).

The position requires STCW training.

The position requires prior experience as a Third Mate of an ocean going motorvessel with a PIC endorsement.

Complies with and maintains physical requirements set by USCG.
